As with all summers, once the temperature starts to warm up from a long cold winter and all of the bugs and humans come out of hibernation, a like mythical vying dance ensues, vibrant of the sounds of people talking and bugs buzzing.

Ah yes. The bugs. Fly’s, Mosquitoes, and every other bug on the planet in a heated competition against time to complete all of their mating and other chores before the eventual chill of fall and then back into the winter’s hibernating freeze.

While looking around the internet can bring an amazing variety of ideas, it can also provide one with a ton of false flops.

One idea I ran into the other day while thinking about how to deal with flies is this one. A Ziploc baggie, half full of water and 4 to 6 pennies placed into the bag.

Curious as I am, I wondered if this could be true or if anyone else might have done it. As it turns out, it is actually a rather popular idea that is used at many restaurants and bars that have outdoor seating.

The idea behind the concept is light refraction going through the bag of water confuses the housefly. If you will remember your biology from the days in high school, a housefly has large complex eyes made up of thousands of simple eyes that don’t move or focus. The fly bases its movement by light and the refracted light coming through the water in the plastic bag confuses the fly causing him to move on to a place that is easier on the eyes.
